Are Memory Supplements Effective? What Trials Show by Ingredient

Quick answer

Are memory supplements effective? Trials show small or mixed results at best. Large ginkgo and carnitine studies found no benefit in dementia, while small bacopa studies reported better recall scores. Effective in a trial is not the same as effective for you.

The short answer01

Are memory supplements effective in clinical trials?

Memory supplements are mostly not shown to be effective in clinical trials. Results are small, short or mixed.

Ginkgo did not lower dementia risk in more than 3,000 adults aged 75 and older (NCCIH, Ginkgo). A Cochrane review of carnitine in cognitive decline found no benefit (Cochrane, acetyl-L-carnitine).

By ingredient02

What do trials say about each common ingredient?

Each ingredient has its own trial story, and none is strong. The table sets the research (see the label page) next to the six names on the MemoPryl brief; amounts are research doses, not MemoPryl's.

Bacopa had better free recall on 9 of 17 tests in six trials (Pase 2012, Bacopa review).

Label lineGroupPer serving% DVAmount used in researchEvidence
PhosphatidylserineNutrients and amino acidsNot publishedNot knownTypical supplement intake is cited as 80 to 500 mg a day; trials were small and mostly under 6 months (FDA, phosphatidylserine claim) (ADDF, phosphatidylserine)Limited and preliminary; the FDA allowed only qualified claims
Ginkgo biloba leafHerbal extractsNot publishedNot known240 mg a day of a specific dry extract in the European monograph for mild dementia (NCCIH, Ginkgo) (Cochrane, Ginkgo (PEARLS)) (EMA/HMPC, Ginkgo monograph) (MSK, Ginkgo)Inconsistent; large trials found no prevention of dementia
N-Acetyl L-Carnitine HClNutrients and amino acidsNot publishedNot known1,000 to 3,000 mg a day in dementia trials (Cochrane, acetyl-L-carnitine) (NIH ODS, Carnitine)No evidence of benefit in the Cochrane review of dementia trials
St. John's wortHerbal extractsNot publishedNot knownDepression trials used standardized extracts for 4 to 12 weeks; not studied for memory (NCCIH, St. John's wort) (NCCIH, St. John's wort in depth) (Cochrane, St. John's wort) (NCCIH, herb-drug interactions)Researched for mild to moderate depression rather than memory
Brahmi / Bacopa monnieriHerbal extractsNot publishedNot known300 to 450 mg a day of extract for 12 weeks in small trials (Pase 2012, Bacopa review) (Bacopa meta-analysis 2014) (LiverTox, Bacopa) (Merck Manual, Bacopa)Small, early trials; modest and inconsistent memory results
L-glutamineNutrients and amino acidsNot publishedNot knownNo studied dose for memory (Ogden 2020, L-glutamine tolerance)No evidence for memory in the sources found

Limits03

Why can trial results be hard to apply to you?

Trial results are hard to apply because studies are small and short, and people differ. A test gain may not change daily life.

  • Few trials test the mix in a combined capsule.

What can you do with this evidence?

Use it to ask better questions. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and read the benefits page beside your label.

FAQ05

Evidence questions, answered

How long do memory supplement trials usually last?

Most run weeks to a few months. The bacopa trials ran about 12 weeks.

Do memory supplements work better for older adults?

Not shown. Large trials in older adults were mostly negative for dementia risk. Age is a reason to talk to a doctor.

What does a placebo-controlled memory trial mean?

One group takes the supplement and another takes a dummy pill, without knowing which. That helps separate real effects from expectation.
